Course Title BOHS P401 Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)
Description This module provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM). The module is at a proficiency level which aims to provide the candidate with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out the stated work.
Pre-Qualification Prior to training candidates should be familiar with HSE Guidance HSG 248 Asbestos: The analysts guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures. Candidates will normally need to have some practical experience with polarised light microscopy and/or asbestos identification in order to pass the practical assessment.
Duration 3 days including assessment and exam.
Syllabus Outline Asbestos Fibres
Forms of asbestos - Characteristic physical and chemical properties of asbestos - Uses of asbestos in industry
Set Up and Use of a Polarised Light Microscope
Alignment and use of the required equipment - Theory of polarised light and the basic physics involved - Observations of occurrences
Analysis of Bulk Samples
Macroscopic examination - Sample preparation - Polarised light microscopy - Dispersion staining - Safety during identification - Quality control procedures - Interfering fibres and products
Practical Work
Microscope set-up - Sample preparation - PLM typing of unknown samples - Identification of asbestos using polarised light dispersion staining techniques
Educational Objectives Candidates will have a good knowledge of the types and forms of asbestos fibres and their industrial uses. Candidates will know the theory of polarised light and the practicalities of setting up and using a polarised light microscope. Candidates will be able to describe the approved methods for analysis of bulk fibre samples and have an understanding of the exposure and quality controls required during this activity.
Assessment Candidates will undertake a practical assessment carried out by an independent assessor, derived from the AIMS scheme and supplied by BOHS, involving the identification of six unknown samples. A full marking schedule based on HSL scoring is used.
Examination A 25 multi-choice question exam paper (45 mins) will be undertaken on the final day of the course. This exam will be independently invigilated by BOHS and is subject to a separate BOHS exam fee.
Certification BOHS P401 ‘Proficiency Certificate’ in Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)
Costs Course: £345, Practical £195 plus VAT. Exam: £125 VAT exempt
